Assignment 8

I finally finished my video.
I didn't have many ideas of a good subject so I just decided on a presentation of the Mount Royal Park.

Assignment 7

This was a very fun assignment and it was the first time I tried to make a stop motion animation. It is difficult to find a really good topic or subject, and I don’t think mine is that great but it was the best I could find in this short time.
I used a large green piece of ice and I tried to take a picture every 2-3 minutes during the approx. 3h while it melted. I ended up with 130 pictures, and I  made de 38 seconds video (with credits and title).
The song I used is J. Butterfly by Maurah, and I tried to synchronize the pictures with the song as much as possible.

For taking the pictures I used a tripod and I used a wireless shutter to make sure the camera won’t move. For all the pictures I used the same settings: aperture f5.4 but I used an automatic shutter speed to make sure more or less that the pictures would have the same amount of light. However because I didn’t do this in a studio I couldn’t have complete control over the amount of light; and because the Ice melted in more than 3 hours the light changes a bit in each picture. I tried to use the flash to have the same amount of light, but there is still a visible influence from the sunlight.

Assignment 6

Part A

I took this picture of the Old Port during "Montreal en lumiere" and I changed the skating rink with water from a different picture I took of a sunset over water. I also added a huge moon and the portrait [from assignment 5] we had to include in one of the edited pictures.

In this picture I made the sky out of water, I added the Eiffel Tower in Montreal and I made a white tunnel to nowhere.

Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry Uelsmann was born in 1934 in Detroit, Michigan and almost all his life revolved around photography. What was interesting about Jerry Uelsmann was that he saw photography different than most other people. He thought about it as a different world, more exactly a  new world seen through his eyes. His passion for photography appeared during highschool. After finishing school he worked as a photography teacher.
His photographic work consistes mostly of surreaklist imagery, formed with more then one negative. At the time when he worked all the work was done in the darkroom, and it was very difficult not to distroy the image. Today it is a lot easier with the all the techology, and with the help of photoshop people can do something similiar a lot quicker.

Wols

Wols (Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze). was a german photographer and painter who was born in 1913,  in a wealthy family. However he lived most of his life in Paris, and later during the war he tried to US but with no succes.
He is mostly known for his pictures and paintings that are described as abstract art. As a photographer he's main team was stains, and he had a lot of pictures taken in kitchens. He modified those pictures in a dark room to make them look strange. But because this was very early, photography was not very advanced so it was very difficult to edit pictures. However he managed to creade is pictures in such a maner that they appeared to have a textural quality.

Part B:  Diptychs

Edit:  I decided to upload a panoramic picture too.
This is the view from my balcony.

Assignment 5B

Portraits taken at home... or rather out of school.

I started to take some pictures at home but it didn't look interesting at all so I decided to go out and try to take pictures of people on the street. Also, I went to different activities and I've got some good shots of people dressed up pretty nicely. The good thing about taking those pictures outside is that I had a lot of light. Because of this I used a fast shutter speed and didn't end up with motion blur (also I didn't need high ISO so the pictures are clear).

Assignment 5A

Taking pictures in the studio was really great and a lot different than outside. We had a lot of liberty on the direction or amount of the light. The best for me was with low light. I tried to make the background as dark as possible, and the light on the person soft. This way the colors looked more natural.

Assignment 4

This assignment was probably the hardest mostly because of the weather. It has been too cold to take many pictures outside and when I went out there was not enough light to take good pictures at a fast shutter speed. Because of this most of the shots are with a long exposure between 1/30 of a second to 20 seconds. The panning shots were also difficult to take because I couldn't find too many interesting subjects (besides cars). For some pictures with long exposure I used a tripod and in those situation when I needed a fast speed I used a big aperture (small F value) or I increased the ISO value.
Even so it's been fun and even though the assignment is done I won' give up until I'll get a really good shot of panning and stop motion.

Assignment 3

First of all I had to start by adjust the angle of the picture because it's not straight. Than because I liked the contrast between the light inside the phone booth and the darkness outside, I made the background black by adjusting the shadows and darks. Than I emphasized on the light by adjusting the highlights. Also, because this is not a black and white picture I added some saturation and vibrance to the colors so it can attract attention. In the end, I believe the final picture (2nd bellow) is the best option because the phone booth is very well defined and it stands out very well.

Original Picture:

A bit of everything. I adjusted everything from shadows, highlights, light, dark, color saturation, etc.
I believe this is the best version of all.

I added more brightness in order to see the background.

I adjusted the color level for various colors.

Assignment 2

Walker Evans is a post-depression photographer ( 1930's) who tried to be objective and show reality the way it was. He took pictures of every-day life and the familiar, and for this reason many of his photographs are considered historical evidence, like facts, and not interpretations. He used a big camera (8x10 inches) compared to what we have today, and this slowed him down and of course the photographs were not very sharp. Almost all of his pictures are black and white because at that time there was no color photography, and he has both horizontal and vertical photographs depending on his subject.

Lee Friendlander

Lee Friedlander was another photographer that dealt with the familiar but he was a generation later than Walker Evans, and in fact Friedlander was influenced by Evans work. In general his work reflected the society in which he lived and he photographed the modern life in big cities. Besides this Friedlander photographed many other things like nudes, jazz singers, and landscapes. He used a Leica 35mm camera and even though there used to be colored photography he preferred to keep his work in black and white (mostly horizontal).
